With the rise in entrepreneurship and flexi-working, home offices are becoming a staple part of any modern-day worker. However, with the rise in technological advancements and handy gadgets, sometimes it’s tempting to buy everything without thinking about how you will benefit.

That’s why this month we wanted to explore some of the technology upgrades that could make your home office amazing, less of a spare room and more of a want-to-work-in office.

Laptops and external monitors

Many businesses and offices now rely on mobile working to operate and as a result of this need; a laptop is now a must-have for nearly all professionals. With the need for affordable technology, manufacturers are now spending more time developing portable computers that have a price to suit most budgets.

As well as an affordable laptop, an external monitor is one piece of technology we couldn’t live without. Not only does it mean that you can work on multiple projects at once, but it gives you the flexibility to organise your screens based on your preferences.

Voice over Internet Protocol systems

If you or your business has to field a lot of phone calls, or you have to organise meetings with different parties in multiple locations, then a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) system is another technology upgrade you should include.

Not only do these phones run over your Internet connection, these VoIP telephones are much cheaper than conventional phones. They’re portable, they’re flexible and if you buy the right model, you’re even able to conduct videoconferencing through your phone.

Wire management systems

With so many pieces of technology in one place, the number of cables can soon clutter the floor and may distract those that like things in neat, orderly places. That’s why a wire management system is a great addition to your home office.

It’s not a piece of technology, but it goes hand-in-hand with the rest of your equipment.

Ergonomic office chair

If you’re spending a lot of time in your home office and you don’t have a standing desk, then chances are you’re going to have to look after your back. In comes the ergonomic office chair, designed to make sure that your posture and overall health doesn’t suffer after the long hours sat behind the screen.

You don’t have to spend thousands of pounds on the latest design, but where possible, try to get one that fits comfortably within your budget. If you can, try some of the more popular designs in a physical store, as this will give you an idea of how it feels before you make your purchase.

Mobile payment machines

For small offices or home-run businesses, a mobile card reader is an ideal addition to their suite of technology. Not only does it mean that you can take payment over the phone if necessary, but if you offer a mobile service, you don’t have to worry about customers needing to visit a cash point before you arrive.

Tools such as the Square Reader act as a mobile payment method, meaning that it can be taken as a handheld reader or linked up to a till or counter (if you have the additional dock that accompanies it).

Most of these readers come with an app that lets you monitor your payments from your smartphone, but make sure that you read the reviews of each product before you make your selection.

A Fidgi Pen

If you’re pen-biter or simply want something to play with whilst you’re working, then the Fidgi Pen is a must-have. It’s not a piece of technology, but we thought we’d include it anyway since it’s such a good idea.

Unobtrusive, affordable and a welcome distraction, the Fidgi Pen is something that every office could benefit from, especially if you’re prone to destroying the rest of your stationery when you’re struggling for work inspiration.

So there we have it, some of our top picks for upgrading your home office and making it somewhere you actually enjoy working in. If your company offers flexi-working, or you’re a small business operating from home, then these should be on your wish list.

Are there any other pieces of technology that you’ve recently introduce that you think we’ve missed? We’d love to hear your thoughts, so make sure you let us know in the comments below.
